If you're reporting something going wrong, it helps to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, and roughly what time of night it happened.
Requirements
RedSleep runs on iPhone with iOS 16.1 or later. It uses Apple's Screen Time framework, which is only available on iOS.
My apps aren't being shielded
RedSleep needs Screen Time permission to shield anything. If you declined it during setup, nothing will lock. Grant it in Settings → Screen Time → App & Website Activity, then reopen RedSleep and finish setup.
Also check that you've actually chosen apps to shield. RedSleep shields only the apps you pick — it never picks them for you.
Nothing is being blocked, and you declined the Screen Time prompt
Screen Time is the one permission RedSleep cannot work without. Without it there is no Protocol and nothing will be shielded, however the rest of the app looks.
First, reopen RedSleep and try again. If you dismissed our own screen with "Not now", iOS never saw the request and the prompt comes straight back.
If the prompt doesn't come back — which is what we see when iOS itself was the one that refused — there is no switch for it anywhere in Settings. Not under Screen Time, not under Privacy & Security, not on RedSleep's own page in Settings. That is not something we left out; iOS does not expose the control once the answer has been given.
What works from there is deleting RedSleep and installing it again from the App Store. A fresh install asks for permission the way it did the first time. You will set up again from scratch — your phrase, your apps, your hours — which takes a couple of minutes.
On one early build the app could resist being deleted. If you run into that, update to the current version from the App Store first, and the delete will go through.
Only the apps you chose are affected
Phone, Messages, Maps and everything else you didn't select keep working normally all night. RedSleep never shields your whole device, and it cannot prevent you from making a call.
Getting back into an app at night
During the Protocol, opening a shielded app sends you to RedSleep to say your phrase aloud. Once it's accepted, your apps open for a set number of minutes.
Each break that night is shorter than the last: 10 minutes, then 8, 6, 4, and 2. After that every break is 2 minutes. It doesn't shrink to nothing, and it doesn't refuse you — but a spoken ceremony for two minutes of scrolling is a poor trade, which is the entire point.
The count starts fresh each night.
The app doesn't hear me
Speech recognition needs microphone access. Check Settings → RedSleep → Microphone and Speech Recognition.
A quiet room helps more than a loud voice. If it keeps failing, email us with the phrase you chose — some phrases are simply harder to recognise, and we'd like to know which.
Setting up the red tint
The red tint uses an iOS accessibility setting. In Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Color Filters, turn on Color Filters and choose Color Tint, then drag Intensity and Hue toward red.
RedSleep walks you through this during setup and can't change the setting on your behalf — iOS reserves that for you.
Changing your apps, phrase, or hours
All of it lives in RedSleep's own Settings, and all of it is meant to be changed while you're rested rather than at 2am. There's no picker at unlock time by design.
Turning it off or deleting the app
You can stop the Protocol from RedSleep's Settings at any time. Deleting the app removes its shields with it — if any shield ever seems stuck afterwards, it clears in Settings → Screen Time.
